blogChoosing the Right Oven for You

One of the most essential parts of any kitchen is choosing the right oven for you and your home. A lot of time is spent with the family in the kitchen cooking and eating so having the right oven is important to make sure it can really be a space that you enjoy. But with so many different types of oven available these days it can be difficult to know exactly what kind of oven you should choose in your kitchen. Whether you are having your kitchen refitted or you are looking to simply replace your old cooker, you will want to make sure that you make the right investment to avoid any stress. We have put together a guide to choosing the right oven to make sure you make the right decision.

What are the types of oven?

If you’re shopping for an oven then you might realise that there are a number of different options that you can choose from. It's likely that you will have a gas cooker if you haven’t updated your kitchen in a while and you might want to stick with what you are used to. However, there are some advantages to having an electric or dual fuel cooker that you should consider. We outline some of the different types of kitchens you can get.

What’s the difference between a cooker and oven?

It might seem like these terms are quite easily interchangeable and we might often use both cooker and oven to refer to the same appliance. However, there is actually a difference between the two and you should make sure you are aware before buying the wrong appliance. An oven is actually just the bottom compartment where you do cooking and roasting. The cooker is actually the whole unit with a hob included, as you can buy the two separately. This is why you might see an oven advertised cheaper but remember you would also need to buy a hob to go with this.

What is a fan assisted oven?

On nearly all food packaging today, you will find cooking instructions for both normal and fan assisted ovens. If you have never had a fan assisted oven then you might be wondering what the fuss is about and whether you should have one. A fan assisted oven involves a fan that blows heat from the heating element back into the oven to evenly distribute heat throughout. This means less cooking time at a lower heat which is why you will get two sets of instructions. There is no reason that a fan assisted oven is essential but it can make cooking quicker and easier so it is worth considering.

What size oven do I need?

You will also have to choose between a single oven and a double oven too, with different sizes for each. This will depend on the amount of cooking you plan on doing and also the sort of food you plan on cooking too. Having two ovens means that you can cook two things at once which require different temperatures and times, without having to try and judge how long things will need to cook in the same oven. It can also be a great option if you often cook meals for large groups of people such as family or friends, as it gives you more space to cook all of the food at the same time. Although you do get different sizes in ovens, the most common size is 60cm wide but make sure you measure.
